- Miles Taylor said Trump wanted criminals found at the border to be sent to Democratic-run cities.
- Taylor said Trump specifically wanted “murderers” and “rapists” identified and bused away.
- Taylor said it didn’t take a lawyer to “recognize that this would probably be very illegal to do.”
Miles Taylor, the Department of Homeland Security chief of staff under the Trump administration, said this week that former President Donald Trump once asked his team to find murderers, rapists and criminals at the border and send them to Democratic-led cities.
Taylor made this statement during an appearance on CNN this week as I weigh how Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sent migrants to places like New York and Martha’s Vineyard, respectively.
Taylor is best known for writing a 2018 New York Times op-ed that said there was “resistance” within the Trump administration. Since then, he has become a vocal critic of the former president.
“In January and February of 2019, Donald Trump directed us to go and take immigrants off the border and, quote, ‘bus them and dump them in Democratic cities and blue states,'” Taylor told CNN.
“But he was much more specific,” Taylor said of Trump. “He wanted us to identify murderers, rapists and criminals, and especially to make sure we didn’t lock them up, and put them in those cities.”
Taylor elaborated on what his team did next.
“It doesn’t take a lawyer or a genius to recognize that this would probably be very illegal. But put aside murderers, rapists and criminals – can you take people from the border and just dump them in the blue states?” he said. “We went, we asked the lawyers, and they said, ‘No, the federal government can’t do that.'”
Recalling that his team told the White House it would be “unlawful” to implement Trump’s plan, Taylor said DeSantis and Abbott are “running into the same problem” with their recent efforts.
On Wednesday, Taylor retweeted a thread from November 2020 detailing the “stupid, unethical, un-American and/or illegal things” Trump has asked of him while in office. At the top of the list is what Taylor said was Trump’s instruction to “bus thousands and thousands of illegal immigrants (especially those with criminal records) into Democratic sanctuary cities to create instability and conflict.”
“DeSantis & Abbott are reviving zombie Trump policies we said were illegal (one of the reasons I resigned and warned against re-electing him),” Taylor wrote in his tweet on Wednesday. “Trumism is very much alive – and its assistants are taking it to the next level.”
Representatives for Trump, DeSantis and Abbott did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.
