Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive is still on the warpath against GTA mods, with the latest victim being the GTA 4 remaster mod.

The Definitive Edition Project recently confirmed that its web host was served with a DMCA takedown notice, possibly from Rockstar or its parent company Take-Two Interactive. The notice required the removal of the GTA 4 – Definitive Edition group project, a collection of fan-made mods and patches that would greatly improve the look and feel of the 14-year-old game on PC.

“I knew this day was coming,” noted The Definitive Edition Project on Twitter. “Here we are with a DMCA from Rockstar (I guess) on our GTAIV DE patch. Well, I guess we have to remove all GTAIV related stuff from the website.”

U follow-up tweet, The Definitive Edition Project stated that so far only GTA 4 has been targeted for removal. The site’s original trilogy mods are still safe for now, but Projekt didn’t sound too confident because those mods remained available for a long time. “Just enjoy it while you still can,” the page wrote on Twitter.

According to the group Web page, “The Definitive Edition is an ambitious project that aims to fix and improve old and flawed PC ports of Rockstar titles. The project was started in 2016 and consisted of a mod pack for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City called Reborn.” It has since grown to include mods for GTA 3, San Andreas, Chinatown Wars and other Rockstar games such as Bully and The Warriors.

Notably, Take-Two only targeted GTA 4 in its takedown request. Take-Two made similar moves before announcing its own Definitive Edition of the original GTA trilogy, which somehow still managed to be a profitable venture despite its disastrous release. This could be our first hint that a GTA 4 remaster is in the works.

If so, it’s unlikely to be spearheaded by Rockstar, who are hard at work on GTA 6. No release date has been set for GTA 6, but fans got an early first look after a pre-alpha version was leaked online. Fans were critical of the apparently unfinished game, prompting other developers to share their unfinished projects in solidarity.
