Bungie is removing the requirement to complete a difficult, time-consuming objective for this week’s Season of Plunder mission in Destiny 2. The “defeat 50 champions” mission objective will automatically complete for players, allowing them to progress the quest much more easily.

Bungie announced this on Twitter, stating that the 50 champion goal was too difficult for some players. Judging by player feedback, this was definitely the case, as champions mostly appear in high-level content and in relatively small numbers. Even the Legendary difficulties of Lost Sectors or Nightfall Strikes include only a few champions, forcing players to make a large number of runs to fulfill the requirement. Champions are also harder to kill than normal enemies and generally require special seasonal weapon mods to defeat, adding a skill barrier to the requirement.

This move is pretty big, not least because the goal was frustrating for many players, especially among casual fans of Destiny 2. This week’s story quest unlocked a big reveal for the Season of Plunder plot, giving new information about the season’s main characters, Mitrax and Eid, and advancing the game’s overall plot towards its next expansion, Lightfall, in February.

It seemed like Bungie created the 50 champion requirement with high level seasonal content in mind. Players quickly discovered that champions killed in seasonal Expedition activities counted for three kills per requirement, not just one. The problem is that champions are few and far between in expeditions – you might see three champions on a good run and only one or none on a bad run.

The best way to fulfill the requirement was in the Master difficulty version of the Ketchcrash seasonal activity, which is both full of enemy champions and counts each champion defeated as eight towards the requirement. It was possible to meet the 50 champion requirement in a single Master Ketchcrash activity, but casual players struggled because Master Ketchcrash can very hard. It also has a very high power level of 1,600 and does not offer team bonding, meaning players must find their own group of five other players to participate in it.

With the requirement removed, players can progress much more easily through the current story of Destiny 2. The pirate-themed Heist Season was much lighter than the spooky and hectic Season of the Haunted, but as this week reveals, it still carries some heavy themes and high stakes.
